The Relic of Our Lady of Coromoto (the Patroness of Venezuela) is one of the most unique and fascinating artifacts in the Catholic world. Alongside Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, it is one of the only two known instances in history where a Marian apparition left behind a physical, miraculous image.
However, while the image of Guadalupe is a large cloak (a macro-relic), the Relic of Coromoto is an astonishing micro-relic—a tiny print that fits entirely on the fingertip of a human hand.
The Miraculous Origin (1652)
According to historical accounts documented in the 17th century, the Virgin Mary appeared to the Cacique (Chief) of the indigenous Cospes tribe, known as Chief Coromoto, near Guanare, Venezuela. She originally requested that he and his people be baptized. While many of his tribe complied, the Chief grew resentful of the cultural shift and fled back to his hut in the forest.
On the night of September 8, 1652, the Virgin Mary appeared inside his dark hut, radiating a blinding light. Furious and feeling trapped, Chief Coromoto drew his bow and arrow to shoot her. When she stepped closer, he threw his weapon down and tried to physically grab her to push her out.
The apparition instantly vanished, but the Chief realized his fist was tightly clenched around something. When he opened his hand, he found a tiny, semi-transparent piece of parchment bearing her image.
Physical Characteristics of the Relic
The relic is extraordinarily small, making its intricate detail a source of immense wonder:
Dimensions: It measures just 27 millimeters high by 22 millimeters wide (roughly $1 \times 0.8$ inches)—no larger than a human fingerprint.
The Image: It depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a throne, holding the Infant Jesus on her lap. They are looking directly forward, wearing crowns.
The Background: The “throne” she sits on has been identified as the architectural entrance of a traditional indigenous hut (bohío).
Modern Scientific Findings (2009 Conservation Study)
For centuries, it was believed the relic was a simple ink drawing on parchment. However, in March 2009, the Catholic Church assembled a team of interdisciplinary experts (including chemists, restorers, and physicists) to clean and conserve the rapidly deteriorating relic.
Using high-powered microscopes and modern technology, they discovered several startling anomalies that mirrors the famous findings of Our Lady of Guadalupe:
1. No Ink or Paint Layer
The researchers discovered that the image is not painted or drawn on top of the material. There are no brush strokes or chemical residues of standard inks (like India ink). Instead, the image appears to be embedded directly within the fibers of the material itself. Even stranger, the lines forming the image are thinner than the structural fibers of the support parchment.
2. Microscopic Images in the Eyes
The left eye of the Virgin Mary measures less than 1 millimeter (roughly 400 microns) wide. Under extreme microscopic magnification, scientists discovered that her eye possesses completely lifelike human characteristics, including an iris, a retina, and a distinct point of light.
Furthermore, within that microscopic point of light, researchers identified the reflection of human silhouettes—seemingly capturing the scene inside Chief Coromoto’s hut at the exact moment of the apparition. One of the figures resembles an indigenous man holding a bow.
3. Asymmetric Cultural Details
While early Spanish observers thought the crowns on Mary and Jesus were traditional European imperial crowns, microscopic clarity revealed they are indigenous royal headdresses. Additionally, Mary’s hair is styled asymmetrically: one side is braided in a traditional indigenous manner, while the other side flows loose, which historically symbolized virginity in her tribe.
Where is it Today?
Today, the holy micro-relic is carefully preserved and displayed inside a magnificent, heavily guarded gold monstrance. It resides at the National Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Coromoto, built directly over the site of the original hut where Chief Coromoto tried to seize the apparition in Guanare, Venezuela.
