Who are Cherubim and Seraphim

Cherubim and Seraphim are types of heavenly beings (angels) described in the Bible, but they have different roles and appearances.

Seraphim

The Seraphim (singular: seraph) are mentioned in Book of Isaiah, chapter 6. They are portrayed as beings who stand around God’s throne and continuously worship Him.

Key details:

  • Each seraph has six wings.
    • Two cover the face.
    • Two cover the feet.
    • Two are used for flying.
  • They proclaim:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts…”

  • Their name comes from a Hebrew word meaning “burning ones,” suggesting fiery purity or intense devotion.

Cherubim

The Cherubim (singular: cherub) appear in several biblical books, including Book of Genesis, Book of Ezekiel, and Book of Exodus.

Key details:

  • They are often associated with guarding sacred places and supporting God’s throne.
  • After the expulsion from the Garden of Eden, cherubim were placed to guard the way to the Tree of Life.
  • In Ezekiel’s visions, they have a complex appearance:
    • Four faces (human, lion, ox, and eagle in one description).
    • Multiple wings.
    • Associated with wheels covered in eyes.
  • They are depicted as powerful throne-bearers and guardians rather than the winged babies (“cherubs”) often seen in later art.

In Later Traditions
